Finding My Why: An Interview with Gregg Bennett, Co-Founder of Sketch Design Consultancy

Welcome back to From the Sketch Pad, our blog and newsletter sharing the thinking, stories, and values behind Sketch Design Consultancy.

In the first edition, we heard from one of our founders about the journey from hands-on engineering work to building a consultancy focused on collaboration and problem-solving. This week, we continue the series with the second half of the founding story — a conversation with Gregg Bennett.

Gregg’s approach to design was shaped early on, growing up in a working engineering environment. His passion for reconnecting design with real-world manufacturing forms a key part of what Sketch is all about. In this interview, he reflects on what led him to co-found the business, what kind of work gives him energy, and what keeps him grounded in the process.

What was the moment you realised you wanted to start your own design business?

It built up over time. Growing up in my parents’ engineering shop in the South Wales Valleys, I saw how strong the link between design and manufacturing should be — and how often that link gets lost. I started my business to bring that connection back: design that respects how things are made, and a process that values hands-on knowledge as much as digital tools.

What kind of work makes you feel energised — even when it's challenging?

It’s the full journey — from sketch pad to CAD to prototype — where every step adds something and every decision matters. I love how all the parts come together, how deep collaboration — especially with suppliers and manufacturers — can turn a good design into a great one. Watching an idea take shape, be refined, and eventually used in the real world… that’s the real fuel for me.

When you reflect on your best projects, what role did you play that felt most natural or rewarding?

I was the connector — the one who made sure everyone was aligned, from client to supplier to machinist. I translated design intent into manufacturable reality, and brought people into the process who are often left out. That role — where I got to lead, listen, and tie it all together — that’s where I felt most at home.

What gap in the market did you see — and how did you want your company to fill it?

Design is too often disconnected — from the shop floor, from suppliers, from how things actually get made. I saw a need for a business that closes those gaps. One that treats design, engineering, and production as a single conversation, not separate silos. My company exists to bring back that integration — so nothing gets lost in handoffs.

Who do you love helping most — and why?

People who are building things that matter — especially those who’ve hit that wall between design and manufacturing. Whether it’s a start-up trying to get a prototype built, or a manufacturer needing clearer, smarter design input, I love being the person who helps bring clarity and momentum.

When a project wraps up successfully, what’s the part that gives you the most pride?

It’s seeing the part out in the world — not just built, but used. When something I helped create is out there doing its job, and the team around it feels proud too — especially suppliers and partners who were brought into the process early — that’s when I know we did it right.

What values do you want your business to reflect — not just in the work, but in how you work with people?

Clarity, respect, and connection. I believe great engineering isn’t just about precision — it’s about people working together, openly and honestly. My business reflects that in how we communicate, how we solve problems, and how we treat everyone involved — from the client to the CNC operator.

If you could describe your “why” in one sentence, what would it be?

“To reconnect design with the people, tools, and processes that bring it to life — so nothing gets lost between idea and outcome.”

Together, our two founders bring complementary strengths to the table — curiosity, problem-solving, collaboration, and a shared belief that great design needs to be connected to the real world. Their vision laid the groundwork for how Sketch Design Consultancy operates today: hands-on, high-integrity engineering support that fits right into your team.
